MCDC held its Red Ribbon Drug Awareness Week during the last week of October to educate students about the dangers of drug abuse and the benefits of living drug free. The annual event was coordinated by Suzanne Graham, MCDC’s Training, Education, Assistance Program coordinator, the Wellness Department and Wellness Advocates.
Among the many activities during the week was a poster, poem and short story contest. Winners, who each received a $15 gift certificate from Wal-Mart, were Kevin Randolph, poster; Sarita George, poem; and Regina Parrish, short story. Sarita wrote two poems, “Why Didn’t I Just Say No,” and “HELP,” which were read at an all-student assembly October 29.
A “Graveyard Assembly” was held on Oct. 26 to highlight the dangers of drug use. Each student received a letter of encouragement from their staff mentor during the assembly. A film detailing the dangers of drugs and what they can do to one’s health as well as the negative impact they can have on families also was shown. The week’s activities were concluded on Oct. 31 with a Balloon Launch.
